Residents and Businesses Asked to Conserve Water

The Town of Carthage has declared a Water Shortage Alert under the Town's Water Shortage Conservation Ordinance. This action is being taken to protect the Town's water supply and ensure adequate water remains available for essential community needs.

The Town is asking all water customers to take immediate steps to reduce water consumption and help preserve our available water resources.

Mandatory Water Restrictions

Class 3 Water Uses Are Prohibited

Effective immediately, all Class 3 (Non-Essential) Water Uses are prohibited until further notice.

Prohibited uses include:

  • Ornamental purposes: Fountains, reflecting pools, and artificial waterfalls.
  • Outdoor non-commercial watering (public or private): Gardens, lawns, parks, golf courses, playing fields, and other recreational areas.

Exceptions:

  • Watering by commercial nurseries at a minimum level necessary to maintain stock, to the extent that sources of water other than the town are not available or feasible to use;
  • Agricultural irrigation for the production of food and fiber, or the maintenance of livestock;
  • Water of golf greens; and
  • Certain testing and drills by the Fire Department, if in the interest of public safety and approved by the town
  • Sewers and hydrants may be flushed as needed to ensure public safety

Voluntary Conservation Requested

While only Class 3 uses are currently prohibited, the Town encourages all customers to conserve water whenever possible.

Customers can help by:

  • Taking shorter showers.
  • Running dishwashers and washing machines only when full.
  • Repairing leaking faucets, toilets, and irrigation systems.
  • Turning off water while brushing teeth or shaving.
  • Reducing unnecessary outdoor water use.
  • Monitoring water usage for potential leaks.

Every gallon saved helps protect the Town's water supply and supports reliable service for residents, businesses, and emergency services.

Why Conservation Matters

Water conservation helps:

  • Maintain adequate water supplies for drinking, cooking, and sanitation.
  • Protect water availability for fire protection and public safety.
  • Reduce stress on the Town's water treatment and distribution system.
  • Avoid the need for more severe water restrictions if conditions worsen.

Stay Informed

The Town will continue monitoring water supply conditions and will provide updates via this website, Facebook and CodeRed alerts as conditions change.

We appreciate the community's cooperation and commitment to conserving water during this Water Shortage Alert.
