New Hybrid Pickleball and Tennis Courts Open at Nancy Kiser Park
Carthage, NC – April 2025
The Town of Carthage is proud to announce the official opening of its newly renovated hybrid pickleball and tennis courts at Nancy Kiser Park, offering residents a refreshed recreational space that brings together tradition and innovation.
What was once a standard pair of tennis courts has now been transformed into a dual-purpose space, allowing for both tennis and the increasingly popular sport of pickleball. The project reflects Carthage’s commitment to enhancing quality of life and promoting active lifestyles for all ages.
“Transforming the old tennis courts into hybrid pickleball and tennis courts was a great move for Carthage,” said Town Manager Emily Yopp. “It’s already making Nancy Kiser Park more vibrant and inviting, and most importantly, it’s bringing people outdoors to enjoy everything our town has to offer."
“I think the pickleball courts are one of the best things Carthage has done in a long time,” said Mayor Jimmy Chalflinch. “It’s nice to see kids and families outside playing together. In fact, I have seen more people at Nancy Kiser Park since the courts opened than I have in the last five to seven years. It’s just wonderful.”
The project, totaling $45,728 with Moore County Parks and Recreation contributing $1,985 to paint the new lines, was made possible thanks to the collaborative efforts of Mayor Chalflinch, Sue Callaway, Town Manager Emily Yopp, Moore County Parks & Recreation Director Chris Wiley, and the support of the Carthage Board of Commissioners. Special thanks also go to the Carthage Public Works Director, Allen Smith, and his team for their help with site prep and installation logistics.
To support flexible use, the Town has installed a lock box with two portable pickleball nets that allow players to convert the tennis court into two full-sized pickleball courts. Access is free to the public, with instructions and a short “how-to” video available on the town website. The code to the lock box is also posted online.
In addition, players can now use the TeamReach app (Group Code: Kiser123) to connect with other local players and organize matches.
Nancy Kiser Park continues to be one of Carthage’s most beloved green spaces, offering playgrounds, trails, rest areas, and now an updated sport court. The Town invites residents to visit, explore the new courts, and join the growing community of players enjoying the space.
