Carthage Historical Committee
The Town of Carthage established a Historical Committee in 1982. The purpose of the committee is to collect, preserve and display items and information relative to the history of the town. In accordance with these directives the committee established a Museum to house information relevant to the Town's history. The Carthage Historical Museum is located at 202 Rockingham Street.
The Museum's goal is to preserve the history of the Town and its people. Visitors to the Museum will learn about the schools, businesses and churches of the past and present in Carthage. The committee also has an interest in preserving present day Carthage and has established a Historical District in the town.
Hours of operation of the Museum are each Sunday afternoon from 2:00pm-5:00pm or by appointment at other times. The committee is dedicated not to preserving just buildings but to preserving the history of the people of Carthage.
The committee is looking for new members who are actively willing to participate in meeting the groups objectives and fundraising. Members serve three year terms and meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month.
Carthage Appearance Committee
The Town of Carthage established an Appearance Committee in 2011. The purpose of the committee is to work with town staff, local residents, business and community leaders to seek to improve the appearance of the town. The committee will undertake fundraising for beautification efforts and downtown revitalization projects, and will recommend specific projects to be undertaken by the town.
The committee and the town have been working hard to improve the appearance of the downtown area with new sidewalks, benches, cigarette caddies and trash cans, as well as fresh coats of paint and area clean up. The committee along with the business/property owners are working together to continue with additional improvements, participation and awareness.
The committee is looking for new members who are actively willing to assist with these objectives and fundraising. Members serve three year terms and meetings are held on the second Monday of each month.
The Town of Carthage Planning Board is an advisory board to the Town Board of Commissioners on matters involving planning, zoning and development. As part of this function, the Planning Board will work with the Town Planner to provide recommendations to the Town Board of Commissioners.
The Town Planning Board consists of seven voting members. Five voting members will reside within the town and are appointed by the Town Board of Commissioners for three year terms. Two voting members will reside within the town's extraterritorial planning and zoning jurisdiction and are appointed by the County Board of Commissioners for three year terms. All voting members will be persons of recognized experience and qualifications.
There are currently two positions available for resident's who live within the town limits. Regular meetings are scheduled for the first Thursday of each month.
Downtown Development Steering Committee
The Town of Carthage Downtown Development Steering Committee is a new project that we are hoping to start up soon. This committee would be comprised of both local business owners and residents with the goal of making our downtown area more marketable and able to generate more business. The group would possibly be a part of facade grants, promotions, fundraising, and planning. This group could develop into more than a steering committee as we assess our needs moving foward.
