Religion and churches have always been a very important and vital part of Carthage. Churches play a central role in Carthage and help bring people and communities together. Many denominations are represented within the community, including several beautiful church buildings dating back to the 1800's.

Church of God - Saunders Street
The United Methodist Church congregation has met in Carthage since 1837. When the 1837 structure was built, it was the only church building in Carthage and was shared with the Presbyterians, Baptists, and other denominations. The Methodist Church has been on the existing site since 1852, with the existing sanctuary being completed in 1900. The First Baptist Church of Carthage has been in existence since the 1858. The church was first located on Ray Street, and was later rebuilt on the existing site in 1922. The First Presbyterian Church of Carthage was formed in 1850. The church has been located on Ray Street throughout its history, with the current building being constructed in the 1920's.
In addition, two Catholic churches are located within 10 miles of Carthage, in Southern Pines and Pinehurst. Other denominations are represented in Pinehurst and Southern Pines, as well.
